A Life Lived on Her Own Terms

Born into a distinguished family whose legacy included the founding of the Crocker Art Museum and generations of artists, musicians, and civic leaders, Mary Crocker Fassett (1915 -2016) might easily have followed a conventional path. Instead, she spent more than a century charting one entirely her own.

At a time when women were expected to fit neatly into prescribed social roles, Fassett insisted on intellectual and artistic independence. Largely self-taught as a painter, printmaker, ceramic artist, poet, and writer, she resisted instruction that sought to impose stylistic conformity, believing that authentic art could only emerge through honest self-discovery. “The unwritten law of art,” she wrote, “is telling it like it is.”

Her curiosity knew few boundaries. She immersed herself in philosophy, mathematics, literature, music, religion, and languages, finding inspiration in everyone from Renaissance masters to Lewis Carroll, Kurt Gödel, and Albert Einstein. Whether painting portraits, modeling clay, writing poetry, or illustrating books, Fassett approached every medium as another way of exploring the mysteries of human thought and emotion.

Much of her work was created in the quiet of her Cape Cod studios, where she also championed other artists, organized exhibitions, taught young children, and helped introduce classical music to local audiences. She pursued these endeavors not for recognition, but from a conviction that art creates understanding between people. As she wrote, “Art can uncover the intellectual and emotional pathways of sympathy.”

Fassett’s work often challenges convention while remaining deeply rooted in technical discipline and careful observation. Independent, fiercely intelligent, and unwilling to compromise her vision, she reminds us that creativity is not merely the making of objects - it is a way of living. This exhibition celebrates an artist whose remarkable life was itself a work of art.
