Loosen up and stretch your creative muscles! The goal of this two-day workshop is to explore a variety of mark-making techniques with an emphasis on finding what works for you. Playfully experiment with drawing marks, painting spills, drips, drags, imprints (etc), and collage. The idea is to let go of control, get out of your own way and push your limits, allowing the materials to take the lead as you aim to develop a small series of artworks. With step-by-step guidance from Jackie, you will develop your skills with design and composition as you begin editing and composing an abstract image through a process of construction, deconstruction and reconstruction.

Slide show presentations of contemporary and historical artworks will be given to demonstrate how cutting, ripping, masking, glazing, and layering paint will add intrigue to your art.

All levels welcome.

COVID policy:  Masks and proof of vaccination required for attendees.

Supplies list:

• Paint brushes of varying sizes
• Scissors, erasers, roll of blue painters’ tape, scotch tape
• Drawing supplies- bring a wide variety of mark making stuff (charcoals, cray pas, pastels, colored pencils, oil pastels, pencils)
• Unconventional mark making tools (old credit cards, cardboard scraps, squeegies …)
• GLUE: Matt Medium, Elmer’s or Modge Podge glue (matt finish). Glue brush or sponges
• A collection of collage materials from home: scraps of papers, newspaper, mesh, old letters, maps, drawings. Itʼs better if itʼs more personal to you and not bought from a store so just look around the house and bring whatever you have that could be good for collage. Also, look for things with texture.
• Spray water bottle
• Acrylic paints
• Paper towel

Instructor Bio:

Cape Cod based artist Jackie Reeves uses mixed media to bring together figurative and abstract elements in her art. She was raised in Montreal and studied design art at Concordia University. Her artistic career began as a professional mural painter for corporate, private and public spaces. In 2010 she earned her MFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in the low residency program at the Fine Art Work Center in Provincetown. She has since exhibited in solo and group shows throughout Cape Cod and in Boston, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington DC and North Carolina. She has been profiled in numerous publications including the Boston Globe, Art New England, Artscope Magazine and Cape Cod Life.

Reeves currently works out of Chalkboard Studio in Barnstable Village.
