Every so often, a museum is entrusted with something extraordinary—not simply a work of art, but the opportunity to shape its future.
The Cape Cod Museum of Art has been given such an opportunity.
Renowned sculptor Penelope Jencks created a powerful plaster pattern of Eleanor Roosevelt, a work that represents far more than bronze and clay. It embodies the legacy of one of Cape Cod's most distinguished artists while honoring a woman whose courage, compassion, and vision continue to inspire generations.
A Story Worth Telling
Eleanor Roosevelt believed that meaningful change begins "in small places, close to home." We believe the Cape Cod Museum of Art is one of those places.
With the support of our community, this remarkable sculpture will be cast in bronze and permanently installed in the Museum's Sculpture Garden, joining Eleanor Roosevelt monuments in New York City and Oxford, England.
Here on Cape Cod, she will welcome visitors, encourage reflection, and remind us that art has the power to connect us to history, to one another, and to the ideals that shape our future.
Every generation inherits something precious. Every generation also chooses what it will leave behind.
Together, we have the opportunity to preserve Penelope Jencks' artistic legacy, celebrate Eleanor Roosevelt's enduring example, and create a lasting landmark for the Cape Cod Museum of Art.
Years from now, visitors may simply assume Eleanor Roosevelt has always stood here, greeting guests as they enter the Sculpture Garden. They may never know there was a moment when her presence here was only a possibility.
But we will know.
And because of those who chose to make this vision a reality, future generations will know Penelope Jencks.
They will know Eleanor Roosevelt.
They will know the Cape Cod Museum of Art.
Most importantly, they will know that someone believed this story was worth continuing.
Through the amazing generosity from patrons beneath the tent at the Gala on Sunday, August 2nd we have raised $110,000 of the $150,000 needed to complete this project! Just $40,000 and this Next Chapter becomes bronze!
