“The Cartography of Cape Cod: Reading Between The Lines”
A talk by Joseph Garver, Curator Emeritus, Harvard Map Collection

Cartographers may claim to be objective recorders of the terrain, but they inevitably incorporate their own subjective perspectives in their work. Consciously or unconsciously, they produce maps that embody their personal experiences and inherited preconceptions. This presentation will explore how the maps and mapmakers of Cape Cod reveal not only a changing natural environment, but also a wider web of verifiable data, myth, and fabrication. It will also examine how we ourselves interpret these maps in the context of our own legacy of individual and collective stories.
This talk is presented in conjunction with the exhibition, cARTography: Envisioning Cape Cod.
