As you can probably imagine, the professional world of film and television was dramatically impacted last year by the pandemic. Suddenly, working alone or in very small groups was not only more practical, it was critically important to everyone’s safety. That meant that we could no longer take for granted all the tools normally at our disposal, and we were left to our own devices— literally.

But here’s the silver lining: these limitations reminded us that special effects, advanced editing software, and big budgets are not necessary to tell a great story. With nothing more than a cell phone and your own creativity, you have the ability to touch people and move them in profound and meaningful ways.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is for anyone. Whether filmmaking is your passion, your hobby or just something you’ve always wanted to try, Smartphone Filmmaking will demystify the process of telling stories visually and help you translate your ideas into expressive and eloquent images.

Course Description:

The core of this workshop introduces participants to the art of visual storytelling on an intimate scale. It will be taught in two parts:

  1. Lecture/Discussion: This session will cover an introduction to basic visual storytelling techniques that can be applied to working with any camera, followed by a Q&A session in which participants can get helpful suggestions and tips about their project. Participants will then have one week in which to shoot a short film of no more than 3 minutes.
  2. Screening & Critique: One week later, students will screen their film in class and receive feedback from Claude and their fellow participants.

Requirements: A Smartphone (or any simple camera). Optional: Basic Editing Software

Claude Kerven’s career is highlighted by his Emmy Award winning work in children’s television, over 25 short films directed at Saturday Night Live, and his most recent directorial work, "They Never Found Her," starring Handmaid Tale’s, Elisabeth Moss. As a screenwriter, Kerven co-authored "Mortal Thoughts," which starred Bruce Willis, and worked as a staff writer for director/producer Sam Raimi (“Spiderman”). Currently, he is the Chair of the Filmmaking Program at the New York Film Academy, a role he has held since 1994. Learn more online at script2screencoaching.net.
