Pottery Hand Building with Neil Kennedy

Join instructor Neil Kennedy for Wednesday morning Hand-building. Tap into your creative self and experiment with various hand-building techniques. Each class will include a demonstration and individual instruction to help you achieve your creative goals.

What to expect:

• Learn the basics: Slab construction using templates, clay assembly - slipping & scoring, and using a mold.

• Projects: Make bowls, vases, mugs, serving platters, and boxes. Explore surface design techniques such as sgraffito, carving, stamping, and hand-painting.

  
  

What’s included:

• Clay: One 25-lb. bag of clay is included in your studio fee. Additional clay is available for purchase, as studio reclaim clay (recycled clay) at a reduced rate.

• Firings: bisque firing and glaze firing (cone 6)

• Glaze: Full access to the studio’s large collection of glazes

• Open Studio Sessions: Access to 6 Open Studio sessions, held on Fridays, 10:00am – 12:30pm. This is an optional additional session in the studio where students can practice and hone their skills

  
  

This studio class is a supportive environment for students to share ideas and experiment with new techniques. With hand building, the project possibilities are endless. Students will be encouraged to pursue individual goals.

Please, park in the back of the museum - take the 2nd driveway off of Hope Lane. You will enter the building through the pottery studio in the back.

Instructor Bio:

Neil recently returned to Cape Cod from Sedona, AZ where he was a successful ceramicist and  taught ceramics at the Sedona Art Center.  He helped develop the program at the Art Center into being one of the most successful ceramic schools in Northern Arizona.  He now teaches at the Cape Cod Museum of Art and works from his home studio in Brewster, MA.  Neil lived the majority of his early life in Dennis and was introduced to the Cape’s rich ceramic tradition by his m

other who often took him to visit local ceramicists.  Their frequent trips to Scargo Pottery, where they watched Harry Holl work, left a lasting impression. 

Neil’s own dialogue with clay began during his college years in Rome, Italy where he studied figurative sculpture and Renaissance art.  After college, following a career in  sports marketing, he pursued ceramics, studying with some of our nation’s leading ceramic artists. Neil started working as a ceramicist in Santa Barbara, CA twenty five years ago, later working in Lake Arrowhead, CA and then Sedona before returning to Cape Cod.  Neil brings a wealth of experience, technical knowledge, and enthusiasm to his teaching.  He enjoys helping students develop their skills, explore their creativity, and find their own voice in clay.
