About

Friday, October 10, from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm.

This school is characterized by its focus on the everyday life of urban America, particularly in cities like New York. The artists associated with the Ashcan School sought to depict the realities of life in a rapidly changing society, often highlighting the struggles and experiences of the working class.

The term "Ashcan School" was coined by art critics in the early 1900s, referring to the gritty, unrefined style of painting that these artists employed. One of the key themes of the Ashcan School was the portrayal of the city as a vibrant, yet challenging environment. Artists often painted scenes from the streets, including bustling markets, crowded tenements, and lively social gatherings. Their works served as a commentary on the socio-economic conditions of the time, reflecting the complexities of modern urban existence.
