Independent Study for Intermediate Artists with Stefanie Allen

Stefanie will act as your guide as you delve into your creative curiosity and develop your own unique direction. Over the course of six weeks, you’ll have the opportunity to really investigate a single piece of artwork, allowing it to evolve over time. Or, if you prefer, you may choose to explore many smaller, faster-paced works. The choice is yours.

We’ll also have peer critiques, offering supportive feedback and fresh perspectives that help us all grow as artists. Throughout the session, we’ll take “field trips” into the museum galleries to view the current exhibitions, to expand our visual vocabulary, gather inspiration, and deepen our understanding of art.

This class is designed for students who are ready to go a little deeper into their art practice while receiving individualized guidance and encouragement. Suited for Intermediate Acrylic, Watercolor, Watercolor Crayons & Colored Pencil artists. Suggested prerequisite: Joy of Watercolor with Stefanie Allen

Before coming to class, ask yourself:

• What would I like to work on?

• What subject matter interests me most—still life, landscape, or abstract art?

• What would I like help with? Composition? Color? Experimenting with mixed media? Developing a series? Finishing a painting?

Stefanie Allen is an acrylic painter and oil pastel artist whose work is recognized for the unique use of both mediums. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, her paintings explore the space between representation and abstraction, capturing the movement, light, and emotion found in landscapes and organic forms. Through layered color and expressive mark-making, Stefanie seeks to evoke not only the landscape itself but the feeling of being immersed in it.

Allen received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she was honored with the Chancellor’s Award. Since then, her award-winning work has been exhibited in galleries and regional exhibitions across the country and is held in both private and public collections. Her honors include the Purchase Award from the Schaumburg Cultural Commission in Schaumburg, Illinois, and Best of Pastels at Art in the Barn in Barrington, Illinois. She also completed a five-painting commission for the permanent collection of the Blackstone Hotel in Chicago.

Working from her studio on Cape Cod, Stef continues to explore the expressive possibilities of color and texture.

She is currently preparing for her solo exhibition at the Brewster Ladies’ Library in Brewster, Massachusetts, opening in August 2026.
