Fearless Drawing: The Figure will place emphasis on drawings inspired by studying the human form from a live model. Topics and Concepts centering around Pentimento Drawing; Continuous Tonal Drawing, and Chiaroscuro, as well as, Linear Contour, Gesture, and Brush and Ink are reviewed and fortified through the direct drawing of the human form, both the figure and portraiture. All levels are welcome.

Concepts of Composition and Organizing Space: How the figure occupies the space as seen in a still-life setup. The composition and experimentation with varied multimedia: Collage, Sumi ink and brush, Conte crayon, chalk charcoal, graphite, watercolor as well as oils can be introduced.

“Drawing is a skill that can be learned. The best way to understand something is to draw it. Besides direct observation, there is photo referencing as well as the computer. Often in my own work, I use all of it in order to fully understand the subject,” shares artist Ann Guiliani. In this class, Ann will discuss exploring shape through tones and values, exploring line for using sighting skills and perspective, and encourage experimenting with combining materials and techniques.

Exploring all kinds of media and techniques in drawing is encouraged. The objective is for the student to find a method or material they like best. Media such as graphite, charcoal, conte, chalk, paint, paper, ink, and brush are all encouraged, even the use of unconventional media as well as combining media.

Students are asked to keep a sketchbook they use on a daily basis.

Ann Guiliani has two master’s degrees: one in Painting and Art Education from New York University and another in Printmaking and Visual Design from the University of Massachusetts. Ann moved from West New York, New Jersey to Cape Cod with her husband and taught at Cape Cod Community College from 1984 to 2000. Versed in so many media, she taught all the art offerings, even Graphic Design which she still works in from time to time. In 2000 her life was altered in caring for her parents as well as her husband with frequent trips between Cape Cod and Florida. The frequent changes in environment inspired a number of major bodies of work. Her six-foot drawings of “Palms in the Wind,” her Paintings of Water; and a series of Drawing From a Moving Car, all challenge moments in time where movement becomes an essential element of the work. Ann is an emerging artist, who has garnered awards both nationally and internationally. She has had five solo shows since returning to Cape Cod in 2015.
