About
(6) Wednesdays, February 18 - March 25, from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm.
Drawing inspiration from selected works in the Cape Cod Museum of Art’s Permanent Collection and current exhibitions, this class with instructor Sue Altman combines hands-on studio practice with close looking, discussion, and guided exercises. By studying how artists approach drawing across styles and time periods, students will learn to observe more carefully and translate what they see onto paper with clarity and confidence.
Students will experiment with a variety of drawing materials and tools, gaining practical experience with different techniques, methods, and mark-making approaches. Instruction emphasizes core drawing fundamentals—including line, proportion, perspective, and composition—along with an introduction to light, shadow, and form, helping students understand how to create convincing space, depth, and structure.
In weeks five and six, the focus will shift to figure and portraiture, explored through close study of three-dimensional works from the Museum’s Permanent Collection. These sessions will emphasize proportion, gesture, and form in space, using sculpture as a reference for drawing from multiple viewpoints.
The course is designed to be both instructional and exploratory, encouraging individual expression while building a solid technical foundation. Best suited for beginners and those looking to build confidence in their skills.
Students should bring the following materials: a drawing pad 9 x12”, 2B and 4 B pencils, and kneaded erasers.
