About
Comics and graphic novels—also known as sequential art—are one of the world’s most dynamic storytelling forms, blending literature and visual art to create movement and time on the page. In this hands-on class, teens will learn how to develop and illustrate their own original comics and graphic novels using time-tested creative techniques.
Students will explore:
Story structure and pacing
Character design and world-building
Composition and panel layout
Typography and lettering
Professional comic materials and tools
Be ready to draw—a lot! This is an active, studio-style class designed to build skills, confidence, and creativity.
Please bring: Pencils, colored pencils, markers, watercolors, colored pens, rulers/T-square, and any preferred drawing materials. Jack suggests fillable watercolor brushes such as these from Dick Blick and Sakura Pigma Graphic Pen - 1.0 mm - Black Ink
Jack Turnbull lives in Brewster, MA. He received his bachelor’s degree from the Rhode Island School of Design with Honors in 2007 and his master’s degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2018. He teaches Visual Art at Monomoy Regional Middle School in Chatham. He is the author of various graphic novels, including Roger Otto: Dinosaur Skateboarder and The Wash-a-shores. He has worked in a variety of media, including illustration, painting, pen and ink, animation, textiles, and more.
