Taiwanese cellist Chih-Yi (Joy) Chu is an artist whose work bridges classical tradition and contemporary innovation. Currently pursuing a Graduate Diploma at the New England Conservatory, she holds a Master of Music degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and a Bachelor of Science degree from National Taiwan University.

An accomplished orchestral and chamber musician, she has performed as principal cellist of the National Taiwan University Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Summer Nights Festival Orchestra, collaborating with members of the Czech Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Her experience also includes performances with the National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic under Marin Alsop, the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, and the Taipei Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, as well as appearances with the New World Symphony and other regional ensembles in the Boston area.

Equally at home in traditional and experimental settings, Chu’s artistry extends into electroacoustic music, improvisation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. She has performed contemporary works for cello and electronics at the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC) and appeared in projects by the New England Conservatory’s Contemporary Musical Arts and Composition departments, Indiana University’s Audio Engineering and Theater programs, and national productions such as the Golden Bell Awards in Taiwan and Sarah Brightman’s concert tour in Taipei.

With a deep curiosity for sound, storytelling, and texture, Joy continues to explore the cello as a medium of both emotional resonance and creative discovery, inviting audiences into a world where elegance and innovation meet.
