Cartooning and the Graphic Novel with Jack Turnbull

August 15-19, 2022, from 1:00 – 4:00 PM.

Ages 12-16. Register early, class size is limited to 12 students!

Comics and graphic novels, or sequential art, are one of the world's great storytelling media. It combines literature and visual art to produce the illusion of time on a piece of paper. This class will help teenagers create their own graphic novels and comics by studying time-tested methods of production. We will talk about comic book materials, composition, story structure, character design, typography, and more. Get ready to do lots and lots of drawing in the class!

Students should bring with them to class: pencils, colored pencils, markers, watercolors, colored pens, rulers, and any combination of thereof.

  • Appropriate for ages 12-16
  • Students must be checked in and out by an accompanying adult
  • Students should bring a drink and snack each day
  • An emergency contact form is required – send to education@ccmoa.org prior to class or bring with you the first day

Jack Turnbull lives in Brewster, MA. He received his bachelor’s from the Rhode Island School of Design with Honors in 2007 and received a master’s degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2018. He teaches Visual Art at Monomoy Regional Middle School in Chatham. He is the author of various graphic novels, including Roger Otto: Dinosaur Skateboarder and The Wash-a-shores. He has worked in a variety of media including illustration, paint, pen and ink, animation, textiles, and more.
