For beginners and intermediates. This workshop will provide an introduction to the art of painting with hot wax and pure pigments. Participants will learn the exciting, ancient process of creating luminous paintings! We will cover the basics of working with beeswax, color, and a heat gun, using the materials safely and efficiently. Techniques explored will be fusing, layering, incising, as well as embedding, and collating. Instructor demos and examples, as well as lots of student painting time, allow for hands-on learning. Students should come to class with 7-8 cradled wood or Masonite panels, preferably smaller sizes like 8x8, 10x10, or 12x12. Students will be working on two panels during each class.

Alla Zbinovsky is an artist based in Cape Cod and New York who paints in encaustic, oil, and egg tempera. She received classical training in art while living and working in Moscow in the 1990s, and has taught art and art history to children and adults. Alla’s paintings embody intuitive, coloristic responses to the natural world. She is an artist-in-residence at the Harwich Cultural Center. Her work can be seen at Cross Rip Gallery and at AllaZbinovskyArt.com. Cover image encaustic on wood panel by Alla Zbinovsky.
