“My Summer with Ospreys: a therapist’s journey towards hope, community and healing our planet.

Have you ever wanted to hold a live Osprey in your hands? What if you had to cross a mucky salt marsh in your bare feet to do it? Pamela has developed an engaging video and slide PowerPoint presentation of her work while weekly volunteering with Mass Audubon and the Southcoast Osprey Nest Monitoring Project on the Westport River at Allen’s Pond. Slides include the process of checking nests, counting eggs, and video of day-old baby Ospreys (rarely seen in person). She will give a “demo” of banding chicks with an audience participant and describe the translocation of chicks (for the Illinois translocation project). Photographs that inspired her watercolor paintings, the importance of human connection, and finally a “therapy session” with Mother Earth on how to work together to help heal our environment are all themes of this exciting presentation.

Books will be available for purchase in the Museum Shop.

Pamela Lowell, MSW, LICSW, has treated complex emotional trauma for almost four decades in private practice. She has also served as a clinical director, consultant, and trainer for not-for-profit agencies. Her young adult novel, Returnable Girl, won numerous accolades including the IRA Young Adult Choices and VOYA’s Top Shelf Fiction. Lowell is an astute observer of both human behavior and the natural world. She knew that birding (and being in nature) had always provided her with solace and healing, and in early 2022, she returned to creating art, painting large watercolors of Ospreys and began donating the proceeds to local nature organizations.

In her latest book, My Summer with Ospreys, she weaves together observations and personal experiences into a humorous and exciting narrative as a passenger on the Lucky Me along with the scientists of Mass Audubon, and a cast of dedicated volunteers. With original watercolor illustrations throughout, her journey towards hope, community and healing our planet is one that can inspire us all to be better stewards of our ever-changing world.
