Creating Sculpture in Relief – Beyond the Bounds of Traditional Art with Richard Perry
(6) Thursdays, March 9 – April 13, 2023, from 10-12:30 pm.
$100 per student
This course is offered with limited enrollment through grant funding provided by the Brewster and Dennis Cultural Councils. It is presented in conjuction with Perry's current CCMoA exhibition Looking Deeply.
Artist Richard Perry teaches this six-session class in relief painting and relief sculpture, designed for artists who are proficient in drawing, painting, or sculpture and are willing to learn new ways of thinking about and creating art. Each student will produce their own small wire relief of a figure in motion and a relief tablet of a still life.
During the first three classes, Richard will explore the physiological basis for seeing art, and instruct students in drawing a dancer in motion from a live model. Students will consider elements of composition, learn to use wire and tools, make a maquette, and a wiring relief sculpture.
The second three weeks focus on relief painting concepts, drawing still life, and learning to draw/paint on a clay tablet. Students will sculpt their still life on clay tablets, cast tablets to form rough relief paintings.
This is a unique opportunity for students to work with Richard who has perfected these techniques throughout his artistic career.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Brewster and Dennis Cultural Councils, local agencies which are supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
Richard Perry studied drawing, painting, and sculpture in New York City from 1970 to 1978 and since then on Cape Cod. He has explored the medium of relief painting since 1975 and relief sculpture since 2013. He lives in Brewster.
