Paint the Collection: Philip Koch, The Morning II with Michael Giaquinto

Friday, March 17, 6:00pm - 8:00pm

$35 Member / $45 Non-Member

Instructor Michael Giaquinto will instruct the group in a landscape inspired by American artist Philip Koch. Part of our "Paint the Collection" series of Paint Nights, patrons will enjoy this unique opportunity to see up close Cape Cod Museum of Art collection pieces on display for each class.

Koch (sounds like "watch") is well known for his colorful, panoramic landscapes. Less known is that he was originally an abstract artist. A pivotal event for him was seeing the work of Edward Hopper. It inspired him early in his career to change to painting in a realist direction. Koch has been given unprecedented access to Hopper’s studio on Cape Cod, enjoying 17 residencies there since 1983, an honor granted to no other living American artist.

Seventeen American art museums hold Koch’s work in their permanent collections. He has had his work featured in seventeen solo museum exhibitions. He is an emeritus professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Koch’s grandfather was the inventor of the original Kodachrome color film process. He is the great-grandson of the Scottish landscape painter John Wallace (1841-1905).

PAINT NIGHT! is open equally to experienced painters and those who have never held a brush. Middle and High School students are welcome to register with a participating parent for this class. Acrylic paint, canvases, brushes, palette knives, and easels will be provided to those attending Paint Night. Please bring your own smock. You are welcome to bring beverages and individually wrapped snacks.

Michael Giaquinto, former Cape Cod Museum of Art Exhibitions Curator, studied art at Montserrat College of Art, Beverly, MA and Art History at North Carolina State University. He taught art at St. John Paul II High School in Hyannis, MA and currently teaches adult painting at the Weny Education Center at the Cape Cod Museum of Art.

He has held workshops at the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Lincoln, MA & The Truro Center for the Arts, and Falmouth Art Center. Giaquinto was awarded "Craftsman of the Year" by the Early American Life Magazine in 2001 and 2005. He is represented in Deborah Forman's book, Contemporary Cape Cod Artists on Abstraction, 2015.
