2-Day Workshop: Creating Intaglio Relief Art Tiles with Richard Perry

Saturday, March 22, and Sunday, March 23, from 12:30 – 3:30 pm each day.

Member $125 / Non-Member $150, includes $25 materials fee.

Join us for a 2-day workshop led by instructor Richard Perry, where participants of all skill levels are invited to explore the art of designing and crafting vibrant 5” x 6” x 1/2” water-colored intaglio relief tiles. Perry’s technique mirrors that of three-dimensional printmaking. While a background in drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, pottery, or sculpture is advantageous, it is not mandatory. Enthusiastic individuals eager to experiment with new techniques, adept with their hands, and possessing a sense of humor are welcome. All necessary materials and tools will be provided.

On the first day, Saturday, attendees will engage in designing on paper and acquaint themselves with the wood-clay tablet medium. Perry will impart knowledge on inscribing and creating simple realistic or abstract images on the tablets, along with unconventional approaches to conceptualizing and executing images. Following this, students will cast their clay tablets in plaster to facilitate proper hardening and drying overnight. On Sunday, the second day, the focus shifts to carving, watercoloring, and preserving the tiles. The painting process promises to be particularly enjoyable! Additional tiles may be crafted based on available time.

Richard Perry studied drawing, painting, and sculpture in New York City from 1970 to 1978 and since then on Cape Cod. He has explored the medium of relief painting since 1975 and relief sculpture since 2013. Perry had a solo exhibition at CCMoA called Looking Deeply: Richard Perry’s Exploration of Gender In Relief (February 1, 2023 – April 30, 2023). He lives in Brewster. Learn more: richardoperry.com
