About
In the gallery, Thursday, March 12, from 10:00 - 1:00 pm. Included with Museum Admission, Free for Museum Members. Registration not required.
Museum patrons are invited to observe a live portrait painting session led by artist-instructor Taylor Fox.
Held in conjunction with the docent-curated exhibition VARIATIONS, this in-gallery event offers a rare opportunity to witness the intimate process of bringing a character to life. Artists have long used portraiture to tell stories of the people they depict, revealing both the sitter’s humanity and the artist’s response to them.
Fox leads two ongoing portrait groups at his studio located at The 204 in Harwich, where students work from a single three-hour pose, divided into 20-minute sittings with breaks. He is launching a new third group at the Cape Cod Museum of Art on Thursday evenings, from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. His sitters—drawn from the Cape Cod community and beyond—volunteer in exchange for the experience of sitting for a portrait and the artwork created. The sitter’s presence and atmosphere shape each session.

Taylor Fox was born and raised on Cape Cod and, after years spent on the West Coast, in New York City, and traveling abroad, has settled back on the Cape, where his work feels most at home. The region offers endless inspiration—the shifting seasonal light, tides that continually reshape the shoreline, and storms that both take away and usher in new life. He is fascinated by the collision of land and sea, as well as the people, animals, and boats that move through this environment.
He enjoys painting portraits, believing that no one is ever boring. Every person carries something recognizable, a spark of personality he seeks to capture on canvas. Still lifes provide another way to build narratives, allowing objects to “speak” to one another, symbolize ideas, and spark connections in the viewer’s mind.
