Plein Air Oil Monotypes  – No Press Needed!

This two-day workshop will cover the process of taking a basic printmaking process into the field. Using your current oil painting supplies and some simple tools, you can create beautiful, unique prints. Making monotypes will freshen your painting by making you work more quickly and providing energizing surprises.  Each day will include classroom time for demonstration and critique as well as time in the field for printing on-site. This workshop is open to intermediate and experienced oil painters. Please bring your usual oil painting supplies and some photos that you would like to make into images. Pictures that have a full value range (from dark to light) will work best. There will be a 1/2 hour break for lunch.

Plein Air Oil Monotype Workshop Supply List (Outdoor and Indoor)

What Students Should Bring:

§ Your usual collection of oil paints, brushes and a palette that’s big enough to use with small rollers.

§ Paper towels

§ A stiff, lightweight surface to work on in your lap, like some sort of drawing board. An easel doesn’t work very well for the plexiglass surfaces that we’ll be working on.

§ Any other supplies that you would take with you when you paint plein air, like a stool or an umbrella if you need one for painting in the sun, an apron, gloves, a table to hold your brushes and medium, etc.

§ A selection of photographs that you would like to make into images.

Supplied by Teacher:

§ Galkyd Slow Drying Medium

§ Cat food cans to hold medium

§ .10 Plexiglass for painting surface

§ .10 Plexiglass for printing base with attached acetate sheet

§ Arches BFK Rives printing paper

§ Tub of water

§ GC Palm Presses and wooden spoons for making transfers

§ Rubber rollers

§ Various implements for paint removal, such as Q-tips and rubber-tipped color shapers
