About
In the spirit of Perry’s juried show VISUAL VOICE: Freedom to Create, January 29 - April 26, 2026, this course asks the artist to make a series of paintings or collages that are a risk.
The day begins by making gestural drawings with charcoal on paper. After a series of prompts, each person will find an area of interest to carry over into a series of primed canvases for painting or panels for collage. Have your choice of materials be part of your series; material suggestions are listed by medium.
Working from the model creates inspiration, whether through abstraction, expression, line, shape, or subject matter, allowing each artist to craft their personal narrative.
Exercises will guide you in creating a group of paintings or collages that are insightful, well-crafted, and conceptually sound. Best suited for intermediate or advanced visual artists, you will leave with a deeper understanding of making multiple works that are compelling, interesting and fresh.
For the opening lecture, Shabott and Griesmer will focus on critiquing for artists in a peer-to-peer situation and the different approaches that empower and support artistic growth.
