Encaustic is a wax-based painting medium that originated with the ancient Greeks over 3,000 years ago. The word itself means to burn in. The primary ingredients of encaustic medium are beeswax and damar resin, which is a tree gum similar to amber; when pigment is added, the encaustic medium becomes a colored wax-based paint. Artists use molten encaustic medium and paint, fusing each layer with a heat source, to create luminous works of art. Encaustic solidifies as it cools and its surface can be carved, scraped and reworked, which creates endless possibilities for artistic exploration and expression.
