In this landscape painting class, students will bring in a photo of their favorite Cape Cod scene and turn it into a gouache or watercolor painting. What makes for good composition in a painting? Learn how to block out your perspective, play with light and shadow, find colors that resonate together and much more! Throughout the week students will be instructed in composition, drawing, watercolor painting, and the history of landscape painting. By the end of the week, participants will go home with their own Cape Cod masterpiece "souvenir".

Cape Cod Landscape Painting Class - Day by Day Planner
Day 1: Drawing and Composition
Instruction in the principles of landscape composition: background vs foreground, perspective, etc. By end of class everyone will have their own landscape sketched out. Class will include a discussion around the history of landscape painting.
Day 2: Gouache and Watercolor Instruction
Drawings will be transferred to watercolor paper and we will begin learning painting techniques in gouache and watercolor. During class, we’ll take a tour of any landscapes hanging in the museum for inspiration.
Day 3*: En Plein Air Painting
Cape Cod has a rich history of en plein air painting that we will learn about through a slideshow and discussion. Students will become a part of this tradition by taking their paints outside to work on paintings on the lawn and in the garden of the museum.
Day 4* : Studio Painting
Students will have the entire class to continue working on their own landscape paintings in the studio.
Day 5 : Final Painting
Any work that is incomplete from the week will be finished this day. If students have finished their original landscape paintings they will work on bringing any of their plein air paintings or sketches to a finish.
*Day 3 and Day 4 may be switched depending on the weather
Anne Tochka is a visual artist living on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Anne has been an artist her entire life, and will likely continue with this pursuit until someone is able to pry the paintbrush out of her cold metallic cyborg claw centuries from now. When she's not in the studio you can find her ambling through the dunes with her dog Sneaky Pete or beach combing up and down the Cape.
