Artist Talk: Brendan Sullivan — From Painter to Sculptor

Join Artist Brendan Sullivan for a discussion of his evolving studio practice, from his beginnings as a painter to his current work in sculpture. Sullivan will explore how found materials, including deconstructed baseballs, basketballs, footballs, and other sports equipment, became the foundation of his artistic process, and how their histories inform the ideas behind each piece. He will discuss the technical methods used to transform these familiar objects into sculptural forms, as well as the themes that drive his work, including American masculinity, athletics, vulnerability, tradition, and identity. The talk will offer visitors an inside look at the relationship between material, process, and concept in his practice.

Brendan Sullivan (b. 1990, Framingham, Massachusetts) is a Massachusetts-based sculptor and painter whose work explores the evolving state of American masculinity through large-scale sculptures constructed from reclaimed sports equipment and other found materials. Drawing from traditions of figurative art while embracing unconventional materials, his practice transforms familiar objects into works that examine strength, vulnerability, identity, and cultural ritual. Sullivan received his BFA from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and his MFA from the New York Academy of Art. He was later awarded the Academy's prestigious Chubb Fellowship and has exhibited nationally, including at Art Basel Miami, Powerhouse Arts in Brooklyn, and the Green Family Art Foundation in Dallas.
