About
Unleash your creativity with one of the oldest and most expressive ceramic techniques — coiling. Through step-by-step demonstrations and guided, hands-on practice, you’ll learn to roll, join, and shape coils into organic forms that echo rhythm, movement, and touch.
This course is designed as a playful and creative process, suitable for all levels of experience-- wheel throwers and hand-builders alike. It is an invitation to slow down, connect with the clay, and let your hands guide the process.
Registration includes 1/2 bag of clay and firing. Please note that there will be no class on July 4.
Joan Zagrobelny is a primarily self-taught ceramic artist who has had the good fortune to study with some renowned masters of the craft. Formerly a speech pathologist committed to discovering innovative ways to teach, she has turned her creative energies to clay.
Her ceramic sculptures are hand-built, abstract forms with an extremely tactile biomorphic quality. She describes her process as meditative, with the repetitive squeezing of each coil creating a deep connection with the emerging form. The variegated texture of her sculptures, created by her fingers as she coils and pinches the forms, creates surface depth, as well as an opportunity to use multiple glaze layers, rubbed off in part to reveal underlying color.
Joan has participated in residencies at Haystack Mountain School of Arts, Watershed Center for the Arts and c.r.e.t.a Rome in Italy. Her work is frequently included in juried shows nationally and has been exhibited in galleries in Boston, Los Angeles, New York, and Rome. She teaches hand building classes at several art centers on Cape Cod. She resides and maintains a private studio in Sandwich, MA. www.joanzag.com @joan.zag
