Artist Justin Perlman is a sculptor and teacher at the Silvermine Arts Center in New Canaan, CT, where he conducts bronze casting, metal working, and mixed media sculpture classes. Justin will lead a discussion of the materials and techniques of bronze casting. The discussion will walk the audience through the modern process of bronze casting from the creation of an original sculpture through to the final patina.  He will also discuss how techniques have changed over the mediums’ long history,  and the challenges of continuing this classical medium in contemporary studio practice.Â
The lecture is offered in conjunction with the Cape Cod Open Sculpture Invitational (CCOSI) Â - INSIDE, on view August 14 - November 16, 2024. In this open indoor juried exhibition, small and medium sculptures on any theme and in any medium will be on display in collaboration with the New England Sculptors Association (NESA).
Justin Perlman was born in New York City and attended Hampshire College where he studied Experimental Anthropology and Fine Art in a self-guided curriculum, before leaving to study sculpture full-time at the Art Students League of New York. Â In New York, he studied sculpture under Lori Goulet and Gary Sussman. He studied marble carving and sculpture under Nathaniel Kaz and master artisan, Gino Lombardi, in Pietrasanta, Italy. Â His education in Bronze casting was done at the Coopermill Bronze Works in Ohio, and he worked in the studio of renowned sculptor Anthony Padavano.
Justin helped establish the first bronze casting program at their Vytlacil Campus as a technical instructor for the Art Students League of New York.
He re-established the bronze casting program at the Silvermine Art Center in New Canaan, CT, Â where he currently teaches this process, as well as mixed media sculpture, and metal work.

His work has been shown at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Â the Art Museum at the University of St. Joseph, Carnegie Museum of Art, Silvermine Guild Gallery New Canaan, CT, Â Sculpture at The Mount, Edith Wharton estate, Lennox MA, Â Sculpture at the Governor's Residence of the State of Connecticut, Hartford, CT, B.J. Spoke Gallery, Â The Madison Sculpture Mile, and the Upstream Gallery in Hastings-on-Hudson.
He has recently won the Curators Choice Award as part of the New England Sculptors Society exhibition at Open Sky in Northbridge MA, and the gold, silver, and the Marquee Who’s Who in American Art award, at the Salmagundi Art Club, NYC.  He has received a grant from the Puffin Foundation through his work as the artistic director for Sova Dance and Puppet Theater.
He was awarded two residencies with the Ridgefield Guild of Artists, in Ridgefield, CT, and completed those residencies in a large collaborative work encompassing two seasons of the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra.Â
He has completed numerous private commissions, and his work is in private collections both here and abroad. Â He has public work at the Pittsburgh Convention Center, Jonathan Lee Ielpi Firefighters Memorial Park, in Great Neck, LI, Â Silvermine Art Center, White Silo Winery and Hopkins Vineyard, CT.
He has been reviewed in the Housatonic Times, the Danbury News-Times, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Â
