Red and Blue DON'T make Violet Or rather, what kind of violet DO they make?

Jane Lincoln is an expert in color theory, concentrating on the precision and relationships of colors in her own art. In this workshop, you will learn how to mix pigments in such a way that you will finally get exactly what you have in mind. Students will work in oil or acrylic with a painting knife. The beginning of the workshop will have assigned colors you will be asked to mix. At the conclusion of the workshop, you may ask for help mixing colors of your choice.

Materials List

  • All the colors you have in the medium of your choice – but required are:
  • Ultramarine Blue; Cerulean Blue; 
  • Cadmium Red; Permanent Magenta; 
  • Cadmium Yellow Medium; Lemon Yellow; 
  • Titanium White; Black; Raw Umber

  • Painting knife: Dick Blick mini needle trowel style 61 
  • Brushes Flat ½ or 1 inch, any old ones are fine
  • White plates or palette for mixing paint on
  • Glass or cup for water if using acrylic
  • Paper towels
  • Hair Dryer to speed drying for acrylic
  • Notebook and pencil

  • Your choice of cover stock paper or BFK Rives 250 or mat board or poster board - cut into 10 or 12-inch sections or cut when in class – this will be where you place your swatches of mixed colors.

Jane Lincoln studied with Ati Gropius Johansen who was at Black Mountain College in the classes of Josef Albers.  As an artist, Jane concentrates on the precision of a color and the intrigue of color relationships. Learn more here.
