Learning Monotype/Monoprint with Joyce Gardner Zavorskas

(4) Fridays, March 15 - April 12, from 10:00 am-1:00 pm, *no class on 3/29 Good Friday.

Member $175 / Non-Member $200 cost includes $50 materials fee.

Beginner to advanced students welcome.

Monotypes are paintings on smooth acrylic plates transferred to paper once only using a manual press.  Each unique impression unites the spontaneity of painting with the radiant qualities of ink imbedded in the fibers of paper. Monotype reveals and informs, narrating a beginning, middle, and end of a personal narrative.

Explore experimental and contemporary monotype techniques using spontaneous painting and drawing approaches. using modified oil base inks. The possibilities are endless and provocative. Glistening layers of radiant ink create truly unique images with depth, mystery, memory and intrigue. Brayer painting, digital transfer imagery, and direct drawing monotype will be explored, as well as quirks and oddities in nature and layered found flat objects. Bring resource images or sketches to class.

Student Supplies to Bring to Class

• Use my plates or bring 1/8” Plexiglas plates cut to several sizes for your images ( ex. 9”x12”, 12”x12”, 18”x24”,  etc. ) best to bring  2 -3 of the same size plates so you can transfer imagery)  
• 2-3 brayers or rollers you may have already, Speedball 1.5” are best. I have larger ones to share.
• Assorted bristle brushes, small, medium, and large, for painterly marks
• 2B or #1 pencil to sign the prints.
• Viva Ultra paper towels, one roll, or soft clean rags (old t-shirts)  
• old telephone books
• extra printmaking paper if you have any, for ex. Rives BFK or Arches 88
• Study sketches and photos for reference. 
• small sketchbook to take notes and sketch ideas and memories
• shop apron or smock.

Optional

• Charbonnell oil-base etching inks in tubes for making luminous layered monotypes
• (Primrose Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Ruby Red, Sap Green)
• Oilbars or R&F Pigment Sticks for direct mark-making on the acrylic plates

• ceramic or glass ink palettes for mixing ink, and palette razor scrapers
• oil base etching inks basic colors and transparent base 
• #00 burnt plate oil 
• white blotters to flatten prints
• newsprint to keep press blankets clean, towels for blotting paper 
• large water trays
• Black china markers, for drawing on the back of the Plexiglas plates
• masking tape 
• Prismacolor pencils (for curating the prints and for planning color layers)
• rulers and Plexiglas cutter so you can cut your own plates to a specific size
• BFK Rives 22x30” white, buy as needed ($6.25/ea.) (3 pieces included in fee)

Joyce Zavorskas received a BFA at Syracuse University and MFA in Painting and Printmaking at MassArt. She worked in her loft studio at the Fenway Studios in Boston for ten years, and received commissions from Pfizer Corporation and Beth Israel Hospital, among others. Residencies include Vermont Studio Center, Great Spruce Head Island in Maine, Master Printmaker at Contemporary Artists Center in North Adams, and Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. Collections include Pfizer, Thyssen-Bjornemisza, Fidelity Investments, Seckar & Warburg, London, Cape Cod Museum of Art, PAAM, Cahoon Museum of American Art, and the Wiggins Collection of Prints, Boston Public Library.
