The Museum School at the Cape Cod Museum of Art presents:

“Sketchy” 2-Day Workshop with Betsy Payne Cook, PPSCC, CPS

Thursday, March 7, and Friday, March 8, from  10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Non-Members $125 / Members $110

Join Betsy Payne Cook for a two-day sketching workshop on Thursday, March 7, and Friday, March 8, from 10:00-1:00 pm each day. Demos and lessons will provide you with sketching techniques that will easily keep your sketchbook full of ideas. Carry over into the studio or when painting en plein air and these sketching techniques can become part of your routine when you prep for painting. Tips will be provided on ways to use your sketchbook as a visual journal.

This workshop will include demos and lessons for two different approaches to sketching, along with identifying the essential value shapes, limiting details, and a guide for perspective.

  1. Sketching on grey-toned paper with black and white drawing tools to capture value shapes while you sketch. I will be using black and white Sharpie china markers, a waxy drawing tool. Alternatives in the supplies list.
  2. Linear sketching techniques to create compelling sketches. We will be using pens, markers, and/or pencils.

You can work from your own photos; Betsy will have some for you to use as a resource too. We will also plan to do some live drawing in the Museum.

Hints for collecting photos

  1. Choose photos that have an obvious light source- natural and interior lights that create some level of shadows/shade.
  2. Notice the arrangement of objects, overlapping, and size differentiation.
  3. Look for variation in patterns.

* As for sketchbooks, bring whatever size you prefer. I use 9 x 12 in the studio. I use 5.5 x 8.5 in the field or for live drawing. I will also bring some of my Handbook hard-bound sketchbooks, great for impromptu sketching when you are out and about!

Supplies
