Susan Overstreet brings her expertise to the forefront as she leads Masterpiece Paint Night. This month's session promises to be a captivating experience as Susan delves into the world of art history, focusing on the iconic work of Henri Matisse. Participants will have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant and revolutionary style of Fauvism through the recreation of Matisse's renowned masterpiece, "Open Window, Collioure," painted in 1905.
The painting itself stands as a testament to Matisse's innovative approach to color and form, showcasing his bold use of vivid hues and expressive brushwork. Created during his time in the picturesque South of France alongside fellow artist Andre Derain, this piece captures the essence of the Fauve movement, known for its daring exploration of color and emotion. By studying and recreating this seminal work, participants will not only gain a deeper appreciation for Matisse's artistic vision but also experience firsthand the transformative power of art.
Under Susan's expert guidance, attendees will unravel the techniques and concepts behind "Open Window, Collioure," learning how to capture its essence while infusing their own creative interpretations. Through a blend of instruction, encouragement, and hands-on practice, participants will embark on a journey of artistic discovery, honing their skills and expanding their artistic horizons.
Whether a seasoned artist or a novice enthusiast, everyone is invited to partake in this enriching experience, where art, history, and creativity converge to create a masterpiece in every stroke of the brush. Acrylic paint, canvases, brushes, palette knives, and easels will be provided to those attending Paint Night. Please bring your own smock.

Susan Overstreet’s creative process of weaving vibrant colors with a technique of palette knife and brushwork captures a visual tapestry between abstract imagery and representation. Overstreet’s bold expressive style is driven by unique natural elements found on Cape Cod that offer an evolving kaleidoscope of color. “I work quickly. Capturing the subject extemporaneously is vital to breathing life into it visually,” explains Overstreet. “Knowing what the paint can do by experimenting with its properties, I move the paint around the canvas until the image emerges.” She paints in plein air and in the studio, inspired by both landscape and the human figure. Susan completed studio work at George Washington University and continued studying fine arts at the Corcoran School of Art and the Art League School of Alexandria. Her work was accepted in many juried competitions in Virginia and now on Cape Cod. Susan has exhibited at The Provincetown Art Museum, The Cotuit Center of the Arts, the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, and the Cape Cod Museum of Art. She taught art to children in Fairfax Public Schools and served as president of the Springfield Art Guild. Susan has taught at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Milford Arts Council, the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, the Creative Arts Center of Chatham, the PAAM, and the Cotuit Center for the Arts.
