The Museum School at the Cape Cod Museum of Art presents:

Design Your Own Accordion Book using Handmade Decorative Paper with Heather Pilchard

Saturday, April 2, and Sunday, April 3, 2022, from 1:00 – 3:00 PM.

Non-Members $85 / Members $70; includes $5.00 materials fee.

In this two-part workshop, we will make our own decorative paper in the first class, and use the paper in the second class to create an accordion book. Your book will be of your own design from start to finish. This is an easy binding technique and open to all levels of experience.

Paste papers are made by mixing pigments into a paste made from flours or methyl cellulose (wallpaper paste). We will use a wheat and rice flour recipe in class. Patterns can be made by brush strokes, pulling, stamps, rollers, any combination of these, and more. The process has been described as “finger painting for adults”. You will leave with extra finished paper for other projects.

In the bookbinding section, you will learn how to score, fold, and receive glueing tips. We will talk about bookbinding tools and supplies so you will be able to continue making books after this workshop. Accordion books are perfect for poetry, collage, photo mementos, or any other creative urge that you want to store in a book form. If you have always wanted to learn bookbinding this is a great class to start with because it is an easy binding to learn. Join us in the fun and magic of making your book from scratch.
