Why are some artists celebrated and others not? Artist, historian and former Director of the Provincetown Artists Association and Museum, Bill Evaul will reflect on these questions as he explores the Museum’s current exhibition of Modernists Out of the Mainstream before it closes on August 5. He will share personal experiences with some of the artists in this popular show of artists with ties to Cape Cod who were experimenting with new ways of seeing in the 20th Century.

Evaul says “We are all aware of the great stars who came out of this tradition but for every celebrated bright light there are many others who worked alongside them, dedicating their lives to producing art with a Modern view and, for a variety of reasons, were not recognized by the art world with the same critical, social and commercial success.”

This talk will explore some of the highlights of the Modern Art movement and take a glimpse at why some artists were celebrated while others were overlooked.

Evaul will share personal anecdotes drawn from life experience and friendship with many of these artists on both sides of the question…including Robert Motherwell, Will Barnet, Fritz Bultman, William Freed, Tony Vevers, Carmen Cicero, Ross Moffett, Blanche Lazzell, Myron Stout, Bob Beauchamp, Pat de Groot, Arthur Cohen and others.

A Provincetown artist since 1970, William Evaul produces oil paintings and white-line woodblock prints as well as works on paper: drawings, watercolors and monotypes and monoprints. He employs a vibrant color palette and a kind of figurative expressionism to create a wide variety of images including musicians, New York skylines, nudes, wine bottle still lifes and a lively fauvist/cubist series called "Dancing Houses." As an educator, curator and art consultant in the field of 20th Century Art, Evaul conducts art workshops in white-line wood cut printmaking, slide lectures on Provincetown Art History, organizes exhibitions.
