Many here on Cape Cod know of Hans Hofmann, but this talk offers a unique sense of historical context for his art and teachings.  Hofmann’s years in Paris in the early 20th century influenced the development of his painting, but it was his own personal ideals and philosophy that set him apart from others of the abstract expressionist movement.  Those beliefs were documented in a film created by Sam Feinstein, who studied and collaborated with Hofmann for over a decade.  The film was called “a classic” by Hofmann and had its premiere at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  A 10-minute sequence in the film shows Hofmann painting The Window seen on the easel behind him in the photograph above.

As a painter and art historian, Patricia Stark Feinstein calls herself a second-generation Hofmann student, having studied and taught with Sam Feinstein and assisted with the completion of the film.  The 29-minute documentary will be screened as part of the program, followed by a Q and A.
