ACRYLIC POURING II - Using Negative Space with Joyce Groemmer

In acrylic poured paintings, negative space (an area of solid white, black or a color) can be used to help draw attention to the active poured section of the painting. Working with negative space can break up the pour into interesting shapes, and it can balance the composition.

In this 2.5 hour class, you will learn several paint pouring techniques that draw the eye to a focal point point in your painting by using negative space. These techniques give you more control over composition, but the process is still fun and full of unexpected effects! You will complete two to three 12 x 12 paintings during this class. 

Previous paint pouring experience is helpful, but not required!

SUPPLY LIST

1. Fluid Acrylic Paint - please bring a minimum of 5 colors - both light and dark. If you wish, include a metallic color!

For inexpensive, yet effective paint, I recommend the CRAFTSMART Acrylic paint in 2 oz bottles available at Michael’s in Hyannis. This paint also comes in 8 oz sizes, so if you anticipate painting more, you should buy the larger size. If you don’t mind spending more for your paint, I like using LUKAS CRYL (250ml), available on Jerryartarama.com. GOLDEN Paint is the top of the line, but much more expensive. It is also available at Jerry’s and locally at Woodruff’s in Mashpee and Michaels in Hyannis.

2. Canvas (optional) - We will be working on 12 x 12 supplied canvases, but if you want to try something different for your 2nd or 3rd painting, feel free to bring a slightly larger size. Narrow, horizontal canvases (ie 28” w x 12” h) work very well with these negative space techniques.

 

Please bring a smock or apron - paint pouring can be messy!

You can keep your paintings at the Museum until dry - please plan to pick up on Thursday - Sunday during regular Museum hours. If you prefer to take the wet paintings with you, you may want to bring plastic or newspaper to line the trunk of your car and 2-3 shallow cartons that measure at least 16 x 20 to hold the paintings.

All other materials, including the 12 x 12 canvases, paint medium and conditioner and white paint, will be supplied, and are included in your registration fee ($15 Materials fee).

Class is limited to 8 people. We will be socially distanced in the education center and masks are required.

About Joyce Groemmer

As a child, I was always drawing and doodling with markers and colored pencils. I knew art would continue to be a part of my life, but never thought of it as a future career. Then in college, I fell passionately in love with oil painting, changed my major to Studio Art and planned to make painting my profession. But soon after graduation it was clear I needed to find a way to support myself. And so I put painting on the back burner to establish a career in marketing on Cape Cod and later, to devote time to my family.

A pastel class in 2002 was the stimulus I needed to renew my commitment to making art, but now with the pure pigment of pastels rather than oil paint. The passion was still there. I began to show and sell my work and became active in the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod.

Around 2014, I started adding other media to pastels – paint pens, oil pastels, ink and mica. At this time I also stopped working on landscape compositions and focused more on abstractions from nature – cropped, close-up sections of photos I took – compositions that could exist as paintings in their own right.

In the winter of 2018, I started experimenting with fluid acrylic pouring. I immediately loved the medium, the process and the beautiful, complex textures that I could not achieve with pastel. Some of these paintings are purely non-objective, but most continue to be inspired by the shapes and colors of Cape Cod, Maine and Utah landscapes, mostly oceans and rocks.
